Surfing on Maui
It’s not surprising that surfing is a popular Thing to do on Maui. While this Island is not the mecca of surfing on the level of Oahu, this is still a popular Maui Activity. The water is clear and it is possible to catch some decent waves.
If you are an experienced surfer then you will know how to watch the buoys and do some research to figure out where the best waves will be during your stay. Generally, the North Shore is a better bet during the winter and the South Shore gives you the best chance for big waves during the summer.
If you’ve never been surfing before then your visit to the Island is a great time to learn this Maui Activity. Several local businesses offer surfing lessons. Some of the businesses that offer lessons are Maui Wave Riders (808.875.4761), Maui Surf Clinics (808.244.7873), and Maui Beach Boys (808.283.7114.) You will be surprised how quickly you will be catching your very first wave.
You don’t have to worry about bringing along your own board or other gear. If you’re taking surfing lessons, all of the needed equipment will be provided. If you’re going to enjoy this Thing to do on Maui on your own, you will find several businesses that rent surfboards and other gear.
INSIDER TIP: Some visitors who plan to surf every day buy a used board rather than renting one. This is often less expensive than renting a board every day and, at the end of the visit, you can sell the board back to a local business who buys used surfboards.
