Where to Go for the Best Scuba Diving on Maui
Before you head out into the Pacific, be sure to stop at one of the many dive shops on Maui. You’ll find great scuba diving gear as well as options for guided tours and packages. Call Lahaina Divers or Scuba Mike for prices.
1. Lanai Cathedrals
Just 45 minutes from Maui by ferry, the Lanai Cathedrals are a scuba diver’s paradise. These large caverns are 50 feet deep and have made the list of “Top 10 Dive Sites in the World” for over 25 years. There is an incredible amount of marine life here, from small nudibranchs to white tip reef sharks. The caverns are also frequented by turtles and dolphins. Be sure to check out the lacework of lava on the east wall of the first “cathedral”; when light floods in, it resembles a stained-glass window.
2. Honolua Bay
Honolua Bay is another excellent diving location. The marine preserve features a variety of coral and tame tropical fish, including manta rays, barracuda, omilu, and ulua. With water depths of 18 to 45 feet, Honolua is very accessible and is ideal for scuba divers of all levels.
3. Molokini Crater
Did you know that Molokini Crater was formed nearly 230,000 years ago? This spectacular underwater volcano is 3.6 miles off the shore of South Maui and is renowned for its crystal-clear waters teeming with fish. It’s a particularly epic site for experienced divers, with visibility up to 150 feet. Keep your eyes peeled for the majestic whale sharks that are known to visit Molokini.
4. Airport Beach
Located along the shores of Kaanapali Beach, this dive site is perfect for beginners thanks to its easy entry. Airport Beach (Kahekili Beach Park) has depths that reach 40 feet, but the best diving lies between 20 – 30 feet. Among the coral, you’ll find dozens of fish species including lemon butterflies, yellowtail coris, needlefish, lionfish, and Moorish idols.
Local Tip: Airport Beach has a fairly strong current running south. We recommend starting as far north as possible, so you can drift on the way back. The park also boasts free parking and a grassy area with picnic tables, restrooms, and an outdoor shower.
5. Makena Landing
If you’ve been researching attractions on Maui, you’ve probably read about Turtle Town. It’s located at Makena Landing amongst caves, lava formations, and coral heads. Best of all, the reef is abundant with Hawaiian green sea turtles who gently approach slow-moving scuba divers. Be sure to bring an underwater camera!
